Do you know the US and Canada have the largest trading partnership in the world?
Over US$ 337 billion of goods passed between the 2 countries in 2017.
(Source: U.S State Department)
And guess where a quarter of that trade crosses the border?
Right here in Detroit.
The volume of travellers, trade and commercial goods that cross the border is staggering.
About 11,000 trucks and 15,000 cars cross every day, along with US$ 1.6 million in trade every single minute.
That makes it the busiest checkpoint on the US-Canadian border.
The problem is the only direct commercial route between the 2 countries is the 89 year old Ambassador Bridge.
This causes traffic-jams on both sides of the border.
As vehicles must pass through city and residential areas in Detroit and Windsor before they reach the highways.
But all that’s about to change.
Because construction of a new 6 lane bridge will start on 5th October 2018.
Completion is slated for 2024.
And funding is already in place from the US and Canadian governments.
Detroit’s ‘Gordie Howe Bridge’ will cost around US$ 3.8 billion to build and US$ 1.9 billion to maintain for the first 20 years.
The project will provide a direct link between Michigan’s I-75 and Ontario’s Highway 401.
Cutting journey times considerably.
The project, to be LEED Silver certified, includes four major parts:
- A six lane, 2.5km (1.5 mile) long bridge with pedestrian pathways
- 130 acre Canadian point of entry
- 167 acre US point of entry
- The infrastructure build-out to connect the bridge to I-75 in southwest Detroit.
The landmark project will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America at 2,798 feet.
Why should you be interested?
Well, it is estimated this huge project will create over 43,000 jobs in construction and related industries.
Even better, for the first time in Detroit’s history tolls will go into the city’s coffers.
Rather than into private hands.
Projections show that the new bridge will generate US$ 70.4 million in toll revenues in its first year of operation.
Chair of the WDBA, the Canadian agency overseeing the bridge Dwight Duncan enthused, “Today is the start of a new chapter for Windsor and Detroit, as well as Canada and the U.S. It will be the best and most beautiful crossing in the world.”
Not surprisingly, the only person in Detroit who’s not happy about it is Manuel Moroun, owner of the Ambassador Bridge.
He’s had a monopoly on cross-border tolls since he bought it in 1979.
Over 8,000 trucks use his crossing every day.
So you won’t be shocked to hear he’s been fighting the new bridge for over a decade – spending millions on his legal challenge.
But now Detroit’s tax payers will have the last laugh.
It’s another big step forward for the city.
